America Under Attack

The Aftermath: Business As Usual?
By KellyAnn Bonnell, MA

I have a phone conference tomorrow to negotiate a potential contract that could be very lucrative. I am completely prepared for this meeting except for on small the thing. The final data I need to complete my presentation is in an office in Washington, D. C. Needless to say, I am not going to be ready for tomorrow.

Tuesday, American business shut down. Our stock market closed, air travel came to a halt, and many small and midsize businesses across the country closed their doors. Those who did not close their doors had no productivity. They were there in body only, minds all riveted on the events of the day.

Then the sun rose on a new day, Wednesday, and for much of the country business as usual. Unfortunately it is a fallacy. People run business and the people of our nation are grieving. Business is not the priority right now.

Wall Street Companies are setting up employee reunion sites to encourage employees to process the tragedy before returning to the gruel of high finance. Colleges are debriefing staff and students alike. Here are some simple things that even small businesses can do to work with the needs of grieving employees.

1. Allow your employees to share their feelings about the disaster.

2. Be tolerant of the irritability and short tempers of others

3. Accept forgetfulness as a natural part of the grieving process.

4. Shorten meetings to 15-30 minutes to accommodate the physical reactions to grief.

5. Be patient with delays.

6. Provide information on assistance being offered and community resources.

Business will slowly return to normal and I will get the information I need for my presentation, just not tomorrow.
