A New Snoring
Treatment
Researchers at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center believe that a relatively new procedure called Injection
Snoreplasty can be a safe and effective way to treat certain types of snoring.
They also suggest that the cost and discomfort to the patient should be
minimal.
Their results were published in the May 2001
issue of the medical journal, Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
In the study, 27 individuals with no evidence
of sleep apnea were treated. In this procedure, a chemical, named Sotradecol,
was injected into the soft palate (the roof of the mouth) as a way of stiffening
it. This stiffening was supposed to reduce or eliminate snoring.
The results showed that an average of 1.8 treatments
were needed to obtain the optimal amount of stiffening. Treatments were done
in office visits about six to eight weeks apart.
Success was measured by the patients' subjective
reports about decreased snoring and by objective evidence of palatal stiffening.
Twenty-five of the 27 patients reported a significant decrease in snoring.
Patients reported minimal discomfort and no significant complications from
the procedure. |

| The researchers concluded that 'injection
snoreplasty is a simple, safe, and effective office treatment for primary
snoring. Advantages over current snoring procedures include simplicity, low
cost, decreased post-treatment pain levels, and minimal to no
convalescence'.
You may want to discuss this option with your
medical doctor to see if it's right for you. Please be cautious about all
surgical procedures and carefully consider the decision before
proceeding.
